Round-trip airfare, a maintenance allowance of JPY 362,000 a month for PhD holders (JPY 200,000 for those still finishing a PhD), a JPY 200,000 settling-in allowance for stays of three months or more, and travel insurance.

Eligibility
Citizens or permanent residents of the US, Canada, EU countries, the UK, Switzerland, Norway or Russia (or researchers who have worked in one of those countries for at least three years), within six years of their PhD or due to finish it within two years. You apply through a host researcher in Japan.

About this postdoctoral fellowship

JSPS's short-term postdoctoral fellowship brings early-career researchers to work with a host in Japan for between one and twelve months, in any discipline from the humanities to the natural sciences. It pays airfare and a monthly allowance, with a settling-in allowance for longer stays. The application is submitted to JSPS by your host institution, so contact a host well before the 8 January 2027 deadline, as they may set an earlier internal date. Twenty fellowships are offered in this round.
